Gordon Duff (1905) Sir George Thorold, elected Alderman of the City of London for Cordwainer Ward in May 1709. He was Lord Mayor of London in 1719–20. The Lord Mayor's Show on the day of his inauguration features in Alexander Pope's Dunciad, Book I:
’Twas on the day, when Thorold, rich and grave, Like Cimon triumph’d both on land and wave
Thorold was Director of the Bank of England 1711–16 and 1717–21.
