Austin Friars

North out of Old Broad Street, in Broad Street Ward, at No. 70 (P.O. Directory).

Built on the site of the Priory of the Augustine Friars after the dissolution of the priory and the erection of Powlet House, etc. Hence the name.

Austin Friars, on the Nly. side of Broad str. near the E. end of Throgmorton str. Here was a Religious House called so, from Austin the Monk, which was dissolved, says Stow, in the 13 of Henry VIII.

Augustin Fryers. A little beyond the Church [of S. Peters Poor] is a Place called Augustin Fryers, now built into several large Houses partly inhabited by the Ministers of the Dutch Church, standing here, and partly by Merchants: One of these Houses belong to the Lustring Company.
