Morning in Covent Garden
by Balthazar Nebot
before 1749?
Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University Libraries, LWL Ptg. 108 Framed, UFS Rack 4A-B
The date is based on Nebot's departure from London.
The painting seems to be based on “Covent Garden Morning Frolic” by Louis Philippe Boitard (1747), British Museum 1860,0623.29. A man sits atop a sedan chair brandishing two artichokes, apparently filched from the now-empty basket on the ground to the right. The chair is occupied by a flirtatious woman who exchanges a piece of paper with a seemingly besotted gentleman. The building to the left is the Kings' coffee house from a foreshortened viewpoint. In the background is St. Paul's Church.
