The first authorized edition of this work was published in 1652 with the title 'A brief character of the Low-Countries under the states'; it was preceded by a pirated edition published in 1648 entitled 'Three moneths obseruations of the Low-Countries, especially Holland'; thi item (Wing F658B) is a 1652 reprint of the pirated edition, which was also issued in the same year (1652) with the title 'A true and exact character of the Low-Countreyes; especially Holland' (Wing F659B).
