The preface has been attributed to the engraver Thomas Cross by Alexander Tremaine Wright in his article '"Mr Ratcliff of Plimouth" and Thomas Cross'. (London, 1909?), p. 7. It was written for the 1688 ed. of Ratcliffe's work published by Howkins (Wing R294A)
