The 'Eikon basilike' was originally attributed to Charles I, but, according to Madan (p. 125-33), it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the King

The general title page is a cancel. It was originally printed as leaf G4 of 'A vindication of King Charles the martyr' (Wing W219)

'The royal martyr: or, The life and death of King Charles I', 'Eikon basilike' and 'A vindication of King Charles the martyr' all have separate title pages, dated 1684, 1685 and 1697 respectively; pagination and register are separate. 'Prayers used by His Majesty in the time of his sufferings' (a part of "Eik=on basilik=e") has separate title page dated 1685; pagination and register are continuous
