A reissue, with general title page, of the following: part 1, a reissue of the 1684 third edition of Richard Perrinchief's 'The royal martyr: or, The life and death of King Charles I' (Wing P1602); part 2, a reissue of the 1685 edition of John Gauden's 'Eikon basilike' (Wing E311B); Part 3, a reissue of the 1693 edition of Thomas Wagstaffe's 'A vindication of King Charles the martyr' (Wing W218)
The 'Eikon basilike' was originally attributed to Charles I, but, according to Madan (p. 125-33), it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the King
The words "Eik=on basilik=e" on title page are transliterated from the Greek
The general title page (A2) is a cancel. It was originally printed as leaf C8 of "A vindication of King Charles the martyr" (Wing W218). The cancellandum A2 'The royal martyr: or, The life and death of King Charles I' dated 1684 in roman, is still present in some copies
'Eikon basilike' and 'A vindication of King Charles the martyr' have separate title pages, dated 1685 in roman and 1693 respectively; pagination and register are separate. 'Prayers used by His Majesty in the time of his sufferings' (a part of 'Eikon basilike') has separate title page dated 1685 in roman; pagination and register are continuous
Final p.46 has errata at foot. A variant state does not have the errata
