A compilation of chapters by various authors; each section has caption title "The texts examined which papists cite out of the Bible, to prove [or 'for the proof of their doctrine of [or "concerning"]'] the obscurity of the Holy Scriptures, examined [-the insufficiency of Scripture, and the necessity of tradition, -the supremacy of St. Peter and of the Pope over the whole Church, -infallibility, -the worship of angels, and saints departed, -the worship of images and reliques, -seven sacraments, and the efficacy of them, -the sacrifice of the mass, -transubstantiation, -auricular confession, -satisfactions, -prayers in an unknown tongue, -the celibacy of priests, and vows of continence, -the visibility of the Church, -merits]". Each has colophon beginning "London, printed by J.D. for Richard Chiswell ..."; the last is dated 1689. A title page for vol. 2, with imprint dated 1689, is inserted after quire 3P. Pagination and register are continuous throughout
